The village of Tosny
Origin of the Name
According to etymologists, the name of the village derives from a Gallo-Roman toponymic formation whose suffix “-iniacu”, an extended form of the suffix of Gaulish origin “-acum,” was used to indicate a place or to denote ownership. At that time, it is likely that this place name was preceded by the name of a person.
In the early recorded forms, the [t] is regularly weakened, and the s, added later, serves to mark the closing of the o sound. The name is attested in the forms Todeniaco in 1014, Toenium and Toteneio in 1035 (1).
At different periods, the village’s name appears in various forms:
Totteneium in 1061 (2),
Villa Toeniensis in 1071 (3),
Toeneium in 1125 (4),
Toeni in 1205 (5),
Tony in 1419 (6),
Toëni in 1828 (7).
